Giving micromineralogy a face

Welcome to the Lithothek

An archive of Earth’s history on a microscopic scale. We collect and preserve specimens, research and describe localities, pass on the knowledge of the people who work with minerals, and offer collectors the chance to take part in what we do in many different ways. We are a non-profit company for the promotion of public education in mineralogy, economic geology, geology, palaeontology and mining.

How we work

Voluntary, shared and under the stereo microscope: since 2001, collectors have been sorting, identifying and arranging the Lithothek’s specimens here.

Die Lithothek gGmbH

We preserve life’s work. What begins as a mineral collection grows into a shared heritage – sustained by the people who built it and passed on to everyone who is interested in it.

A home for a life’s work

Besides the successful rejuvenation of the mineral enthusiasts who work with us, the non-profit Lithothek relies on the support of collectors and donors. In 2025 and 2026, this made it possible to take over two extensive collections from Austria, which are now being integrated step by step. This is how we give every collector a lasting home for their life’s work.

We would be delighted if you supported us actively – whether by enriching the Lithothek with selected specimens, by entrusting your collection to us, or by making a donation that enables our projects promoting education, science and research in mineralogy, economic geology, geology, palaeontology and mining.
